My friend Pam has a saying, "I'm so mad I could spit."
And I'm ready to spit.
I have a credit card to a store that sent me a post card. Today, the store was holding a 'stuff and save' day where you receive a tote bag and anything that fits in it will be 30% off. Well, there was a little note that said if you are one of the 1st 50 customers you get a special bag that entitles you to 50% off your overstuffed bag.
So, I put my double stroller in the car and headed with Maggie and Rosie to the mall. We were number seven in line and were there an hour before the store opened. While I entertained the girls outside the store, I noticed a green sign in the window said, "The 1st 50 customers receive a special tote bag and 50% off their purchase."
Once the doors opened I was handed my special 50% off tote. I asked several store employees to clarify the green sign. I told them I planned on buying a few winter coats and I didn't know if it was the entire purchase or just what was in the bag.
Repeatedly, I heard some variation of, "as long as you are buying it all at once, we will give you 50% off of the total".
While in the check-out line I overheard a cashier tell another woman (who had waaay more stuff than I did) that everything had to fit in the tote bag. The customer said that she was told it didn't have to fit- blah blah blah and she received the 50% off the total because she had the 1st 50 customer tote.
These three busy-bodies behind me went nuts.
Who does she think she is?
Why does she get a 50% discount and I only get 30 off?
Who do you have to know around here to make things fair?
I guess you just have to be a *&$#@ to get whatever you want.
It was my turn at the register and I knew the ladies were going to go nuts.
So, I politely said to the cashier, "I'm not sure what to do. I have way more than can possibly fit in the bag. When I came in the store I asked if it was 50% off the purchase or just the content of the bag and I was told by more than one employee that it was the whole purchase. Should I try to squish everything in the bag?"
The cashier told me that it was fine...50% off for everything....employees were telling customers two different stories but that she clarified with the manager who told her to give the 50% off the entire purchase for the customers who received the special tote.... if we really wanted to be technical she would help me get my stuff in the bag because she was sure it would fit...
And then the flipping peanut gallery started.
If you complain enough you get everything.
Good idea. Let's say, "someone told me I could have whatever I want for free so I'll take everything in the store."
It's not right. If it isn't the same for everyone, no one should get a discount.
How much stuff can she possibly buy? She's taking advantage of the sale and will ruin it for everyone.
The store should make one rule and not let people who *&^%# get a better deal than everyone else.
I wanted to scream that I would buy everything in their stupid tote bags for them if they would just shut up and get over it.
It's capitalism. The store sells stuff. I buy stuff. Everyone is happy.
I followed the rules. I was one of the 1st 50 people. I received my special 50% off tote bag. I didn't know anyone. I didn't (*&%#. I didn't buy everything in the store. I did what the store asked. I received an extra discount (along with 49 other dedicated shoppers) because the early bird catches the worm.
